They’re Back!

_MG_7742

To my surprise the Pine Siskins have returned in mid winter. I spotted one on the feeder the other day, but it didn’t like the old thistle seed that was in the feeder since last fall so he flew away. I changed it out with new stuff this past weekend and what do you know. They have returned to feed.

A Foggy Morning on the Portage Canal

_MG_2051

Artificial lights illuminate the fog over the Portage Canal.

Those of us who live here know what a special place this can be, but it’s even more wondrous when nature does her own special magic. Such was the case this particular morning when I noticed the canal covered with fog.

First Snow with the Cardinals

Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal enjoying a meal together.

Who would of thought that on October 10th we would get our first snow. Well, I guess they did warn us it was coming so it really wasn’t that big a surprise. But nobody briefed me regarding the cardinal visit we were about to receive. Read the rest of this entry »

KFC and a Sunset

Finally a decent sunset image at the Breakers.

As the days gets shorter a new problem begins to arise with one looking to shoot sunsets. That problem is dinner. At this time of the year the sun is setting a little after 7 PM. I like to get to my shooting location about 30 minutes prior to that get some of the pre-sunset images and prepare for what is about to happen when the sun finally goes down. Add to that a 15 minute drive to get to the destination which means you really have to be thinking about leaving the house by 6:30 or so which happens to be when we usually eat dinner.

On The Rocks

So here I am, out at the Breakers once again. Like I said a couple posts ago I needed a new “go to” spot for late day photo ops and lately I guess this is becoming the place. Today it’s a bit windy and mostly clear. To the west are some scattered clouds which should create some interest when the sun goes down.

Finch space for rent...

It saddened me when I finally realized that my Goldfinches and Pine Siskins who have been keeping me company while I work from my office have moved on for the winter. The past few days one or two would show up for a short time, but today marks the first day I haven’t seen a single one.

Calm at the Breakers

After my stormy night visit to the north entry point of the portage canal  I realized that I needed to go back out there on a nicer evening and hopefully get some sunset images. Now that my permanent home is Hancock I needed to find a new “go to” location where I can get those end of day shots that I used to capture from Millie Hill in Iron Mountain.

Stormy Night at the Breakers

Yes, it's a dark image... it was taken in the dark so what would you expect!

If it would have been a month of so later and 10 degrees colder the storm that passed through yesterday and last night probably would have been our first winter storm of the season. Fortunately, that didn’t happen which is a good thing since we really don’t seem to have a problem with getting our share of winter storms up here in the Keweenaw.

Say Goodbye to April

For some strange reason I have had quite a few photo ops recently. So I guess it seemed only fitting that as I was considering winding down for the day I saw the setting sun approaching the horizon. So what the heck. Might as well go get some shots. It is the last day of April after all.

Party at My House

Lunchtime today was even more busy than yesterday. Being it the last day of April I shouldn’t be surprised that the backyard wildlife would throw a party. Here are some of images I got in 20 minutes time in my backyard. The light wasn’t great, but the activity was.
