Artificial lights illuminate the fog over the Portage Canal.
Those of us who live here know what a special place this can be, but it’s even more wondrous when nature does her own special magic. Such was the case this particular morning when I noticed the canal covered with fog.

Lights from the SDC create a UFO like glow.
I awoke earlier than usual and thought it would be a good opportunity to see if I could get a sunrise. When I looked out the window I saw that the canal had some fog on it so I knew this was something a bit different that might be worth capturing.

Fog completely engulfs the Portage Lift Bridge.
I tried a few shots down by the bridge, but they weren’t turning out as well as I had hoped. Then I remembered the rock pile between the lookout and the mine shaft and decided to take a run up there. That turned out to be the perfect place to capture something I had never seen before.

With the fog now gone from MTU a new day begins for students and faculty.
The funny thing about this morning was that there never was a real sunrise. The clouds to the east were too thick for the sun to show, but that actually worked in my favor since I had very consistent light for quite a while. Below is a panoramic I put together from 3 images.
