They’re Back!
Posted by Mark Riutta in Nature on January 6th, 2010

To my surprise the Pine Siskins have returned in mid winter. I spotted one on the feeder the other day, but it didn’t like the old thistle seed that was in the feeder since last fall so he flew away. I changed it out with new stuff this past weekend and what do you know. They have returned to feed.
Things that make you go hmm…

Feeling a little creative frustration with all the white outside (aka snow) so I decided to find something inside to shoot. Here are a few things that caught my eye.

Dierks Bentley via Point and Shoot

Dierks Bentley performs at the Island Resort Casino
Although I love photographing concerts I have given up trying to get my digital SLR into such events to get some decent pics. It’s always a crap shoot as to whether they are going to let you bring one in or not. Now on the other hand they never have a problem with small point and shoot cameras so the simple solution is to go with the flow.
Inside the Tape at the Lake Superior Performance Rally

Travis Pastrana is the first to round the turn at the Stage 1 spectator point at the Lake Superior Performance Rally in Houghton, MI.
I’ve seen the Lake Superior Performance Rally a few times now, but never spectated from the Stage 1 location in Houghton. Now that I live in Hancock getting over to see it on a Friday afternoon is a simple thing to do so I figured why not. Read the rest of this entry »
A Foggy Morning on the Portage Canal
Posted by Mark Riutta in Nature, Portage Canal, Portage Lift Bridge on October 15th, 2009

Artificial lights illuminate the fog over the Portage Canal.
Those of us who live here know what a special place this can be, but it’s even more wondrous when nature does her own special magic. Such was the case this particular morning when I noticed the canal covered with fog.
A Big Slow Ship

The freighter Algosoo waits before passing under the Portage Lift Bridge.
At 730 feet long the freighter Algosoo is quite large. Not the biggest on the Great Lakes, but probably one of the biggest ever to come through the Portage Canal and pass under the Lift Bridge. It’s also slow as would be testified unanimously by any driver waiting for it to pass so the Bridge could be lowered again.

The freighter Algosoo realigns its approach to the Portage Lift Bridge.
First Snow with the Cardinals

Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal enjoying a meal together.
Who would of thought that on October 10th we would get our first snow. Well, I guess they did warn us it was coming so it really wasn’t that big a surprise. But nobody briefed me regarding the cardinal visit we were about to receive. Read the rest of this entry »
KFC and a Sunset

Finally a decent sunset image at the Breakers.
As the days gets shorter a new problem begins to arise with one looking to shoot sunsets. That problem is dinner. At this time of the year the sun is setting a little after 7 PM. I like to get to my shooting location about 30 minutes prior to that get some of the pre-sunset images and prepare for what is about to happen when the sun finally goes down. Add to that a 15 minute drive to get to the destination which means you really have to be thinking about leaving the house by 6:30 or so which happens to be when we usually eat dinner.
On The Rocks

So here I am, out at the Breakers once again. Like I said a couple posts ago I needed a new “go to” spot for late day photo ops and lately I guess this is becoming the place. Today it’s a bit windy and mostly clear. To the west are some scattered clouds which should create some interest when the sun goes down.
