Winter Drive in the Keweenaw

A glassy coating of ice covers the shoreline of Copper Harbor.

It’s become sort of a tradition for Lori and I in the winter. We wait for that rare weekend day when the stars must be lined up just right and the sun shines in the Keweenaw Peninsula. There aren’t many of them and surprisingly this is the first one this winter that prompted us to take a drive.

A coating of ice hangs on to the rocks along Lake Superior.

What was interesting to us was the fact that Lake Superior was completely open. Usually, at this stage of the winter it can be difficult to see open water as you drive along the shoreline. Not the case this winter. Even the amount of snow was lower than in years past. It’s rare to be able to actually walk off the road without having to contend with waist deep snow.

Looks more like spring on Eagle Harbor.

Looks more like spring than February on Eagle Harbor.

Of course according to Punxsutawny Phil there is supposed to be plenty of winter left, but you wouldn’t know it by looking across the big lake.

A rare calm on the big lake.
