SCCA Autocross – Drive it hard!

Thomas Yeoman of Houghton running the course.

Last fall when my buddy and co-worker Jim Chartre mentioned there was an autocross scheduled for late April in Houghton my first thought was “that ain’t going to happen!”. Although the snow would have most likely stopped by then the snowbanks would still be all over the parking lots. It just didn’t seem likely. But here we were. It had been unseasonably warm, hadn’t snowed in weeks and there was only one snowbank left on lot 24.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with autocross it’s an event where you can take you car and run it around a course defined by orange cones. The fastest time wins. No style points. No instant replays. And this is no typical Sunday drive. These guys are serious about being competitive and they push their cars as hard as they can.

I’ve had the opportunity on a few occasions to ride with Jim as he ran the course. From the moment the all clear is given to the moment you cross the finish it’s an all out adrenalin charged assault. I keep telling him he could sell the privilege to ride with him. It’s that intense.
